A touching note of thanks written by an airline passenger to the pilot of her flight has gone viral.

The handwritten message references the recent Germanwings tragedy in the French Alps, which claimed 150 lives, and is described by its author as an attempt to "reach out" and "extend a compassionate hand".

The note continues: "I understand an event so horrific as this one affects those with your responsibility more than others, and maybe sometimes a kind word, random but heartfelt, can make a difference.

"Thank you for taking me home. Thank you for doing so safely. Thank you for allowing me to live the life I do in Spain and split my time with my family in England too. You make the excitement I feel now to see my family possible.

"I've had a wonderful flight and hope you have too. You're making a massive difference and you're the reason I can smile tonight."

The letter, written by a passenger called Bethanie, was shared on Twitter by Jai Dillon, who says he is an airline pilot based in Cheshire.

"A letter given to a colleague from a passenger onboard his aircraft," he wrote. "Providing proof that we're all in this together."

The photo has been retweeted almost 3,900 times.
