Australia's biggest hotels by number of rooms: The top 18 biggest

Research conducted by Hotels.com has revealed the largest hotels, by number of rooms, across the country.

Australia's largest hotel, the Towers of Chevron Renaissance in Surfers Paradise, has a whopping 707 rooms spread over three separate towers.

Although it may glow gold at night, it is not the ostentatious accommodation you'd expect for its Gold Coast location.

Its comfortable one, two and three-bedroom apartments are fully self-contained and have great views of the Pacific Ocean or the Gold Coast hinterland behind it. Those looking for fancy shindigs can book one of its penthouse suites.

The resort is located metres away from Surfers Paradise but it possesses its own "beach in the sky" on the fifth floor, complete with tropical gardens and entertainment areas.

Towers of Chevron boasts its own shopping mall and "Chevron Lane", a replica of Melbourne's laneway culture, featuring street art and food. There's also a theatre, separate lap pools, games rooms and common areas.

Dominating the landscape at Melbourne's Southbank is Australia's second largest hotel, the Crown Metropol, which tallies a grand total of 658 rooms, most with killer city and bay views.

Together with Crown Towers (482 rooms) and Crown Promenade (465 rooms), the Crown complex accommodates a sprawling space, and if combined together, would easily be Australia's biggest hotel.

There's not much incentive to leave the complex - some of the best chefs work under the Crown's umbrella, such as Neil Perry and Heston Blumenthal. Throw in some great leisure activities, casino aside, this offers one of Australia's best hotel experiences.

Overlooking Sydney's Darling Harbour and Cockle Bay, Four Points by Sheraton clocks in at third-biggest, containing 648 rooms including 17 suites. Self rated at 4.5 stars, its central location, setting and variety of reasonably-priced rooms make this an attractive proposition for visitors to the New South Wales capital.

A renovated Hilton Sydney is fourth on the list with 577 rooms. Situated in the heart of a revamped CBD, it puts visitors to the city in a great spot from which to explore hidden bars and basements that have become a feature of Sydney's CBD. The rooms themselves have eight different styles including a 'relaxation' style if you're planning on a weekend escape.

Undergoing a $345 million makeover, fifth-placed Jupiters Hotel & Casino is the most Vegas of all the accommodation options on the Gold Coast, emphasising the "play" in the "eat, play and stay" cliche. The 594 rooms accommodate guests who will be happy confined within the hotel's walls either gambling, relaxing by the pool or getting an indulgent massage. For those looking for more than just a hotel room, there's also 29 suites and two penthouses with private sun terraces.

Improvements to the hotel will include a brand new six-star tower that will bring more lavish sparkle to the Gold Coast, with luxury suites containing private infinity pools at the centrepiece of the transformation, along with new restaurants and bars.

Despite Crown Complex's combined room total of 1605, Australian hotels have a long way to go before they catch up to the rest of the world's biggest hotels.

Las Vegas occupies seven of the top 10 spots for largest hotels by room size, with the first being The Venetian Las Vegas + The Palazzo with an incredible 7117 rooms spread over 53 floors. It has been the world's largest hotel since 2008. The second, MGM Grand (6852 rooms), held the position of world's largest from 1993 until 2006. The First World Hotel in Malaysia (6118 rooms), is now the third-largest, but held the top position from 2006 until 2008.

Other hotels outside of Vegas holding top 10 positions include the Izmailovo Hotel in Moscow (5000 rooms), and the Ambassador City Jomtien in Pattaya, Thailand (4219 rooms).

Australian hotels don't even make it into the top 200 in the world – those ranked at the bottom of that list contain at least 1000 rooms.
