I have fallen in love at the snow too many times to count. I blame the altitude. The lack of oxygen is equivalent to beer goggles at sea level.
Blokes I wouldn’t recommend to 'that' girl that slept with my boyfriend in Year 11 (you know who you are) suddenly look like George Clooney once I click into ski boots. Instead of gaydar I have twitdar. Like a tequila-filled shotski I attract the dysfunctional looking to leave their troubles behind at the national park gates. Some would say like attracts like.
Given the odds at the snow (blokes don't call a weekend at the snow a "sausage fest" for nothing) it should be easy for the single girl looking for everlasting love to find it. But while the odds are good, the goods are odd - damaged, married already or only 'in it' for the weekend. We could talk about cheaters at the snow but that's so three years ago.
But despite the daily walks of shame from men and women in snow villages around the world, it is possible to find real lasting love at the snow. Seal proposed to Heidi Klum in Whistler. OK, maybe not the best example.
If you ski or snowboard chances are you want someone else who skis or snowboards - or at least someone who is happy to spend their annual leave alone in the lodge with frostbite. Australia’s Fit2Date urban group workouts are taking the search for love (and fitness) to the snow with a weekend at Perisher on August 17.
Yes, there are still spaces available and no you can’t ask to see the photo of who sits next to you on one of the two buses departing from Sydney and Melbourne, filled to the exit window on the back row with salivating single skiers and snowboarders ready to get it on. Don’t laugh, Fit2Date have numerous couples who met through sweat and are now married.
Should you meet the man or woman of your dreams, or at least your season, you could save yourself the cost of a lift pass and get married at Loveland, Colorado on Valentine's Day. The annual 'Marry Me and Ski For Free' communal wedding on the peak of the mountain is one hell of a commitment just for a free lift pass and a slice of wedding cake but, hey, I’ve done worse for sugar.
Snowbird in Utah in the USA ran chairlift speed-dating last Valentine's day. The theory is that you ride a double chairlift with a potential date, make your impression in the time it takes to get to the top and then decide if you’ll ski or board back down together or guide them off a cliff. The resort set up a singles male and singles female lift line. Check out the video of the day here.
Coronet Peak in New Zealand has a singles night skiing event on August 31, usual sheep jokes apply. The lifties will introduce ewe to your potential mate and send you on your way up the hill. Then you can herd, sorry, ski your way back down hand in gloved hoof, I mean hand. Register on the day with purchase of a night skiing ticket.
You could of course do it the old fashioned way, like my friend Mary-Lou who met her gorgeous man, later husband, on the bar at the salubrious Keller nightclub in Thredbo in the early hours of a stick-your-feet-to-the-dance-floor Saturday night.
Lucky for her, and him, altitude gave her rose coloured glasses rather than beer goggles.
Have you experienced altitude beer goggles at the snow? Maybe you've met the woman/man of your lifelong dreams and are joined now for life? Are you single and looking for someone who loves the snow to love you too?
Share your snow love or loss stories, your personal columns and disaster dates and comment on the blog below to WIN a Suunto Ambit HR Watch worth $629.99 to keep track of altitude levels and heart rate flutters on the snow and in the bar.
