Are you bored of all of those Instagrams of smug travellers raising wine glasses as they travel around Europe?

Well, this new beverage could shake things up a bit.

Spanish startup Gik has produced the world's first ever blue wine, which they say is targeted towards millennial drinkers (you know, those ones who are always on Instagram).

According to Eater.com, the poison-hued tipple is made from a blend of red and white grapes, predominantly sourced from the Spanish wine regions of La Rioja, Zaragoza, Leon, and Castilla-La Mancha.

The blue colour comes from anthocyanin, a pigment found in grape skin, with a touch of indigo dye thrown in for good measure.

Two years of research and development went into the product, which was created in collaboration with the University of the Basque Country.

"We wanted to create a sweet and drinkable product, in tune with the changing world where maybe the wine industry needs a little revolution," a spokesman for Gik told The Olive Press when the drink launched last year in Spain.

Until now, the drink has only been available on the Gik website. But the company is expanding retail sales to France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany, with the US also on the radar. A 750ml bottle retails for 10 euros ($A15).

So, what does it taste like?

Eater.com reports that the wine fits into the "chilled, sweet white wine category".

Suggested pairings include sushi, nachos with guacamole, carbonara, and smoked salmon.
