Bridging the gap from Zimbabwe to Zambia

By Michael Gebicki

We are heading to Victoria Falls, staying in Zimbabwe, and are hoping to cross into Zambia to view the falls from the other side and see around Livingstone. Do we require a multi-entry visa for Zimbabwe or is there a cross-border understanding for tourists in the Victoria Falls area?

- M. Chapman, Melbourne.

According to the experts at Sydney's Classic Safari Company (classicsafaricompany.com.au), you will need an entry visa for Zambia. You can purchase this on the spot for $US50. You will also need a re-entry visa for Zimbabwe.

If you purchase the Zimbabwe re-entry visa in advance, the cost is $US45 but if you have only a single-entry visa, you can purchase another visa when you return to Zimbabwe, for $US35.

If you only want to take a look at the falls from the middle of the bridge (pictured), you can pass through the Zimbabwean border post and stroll forth without any requirement for additional visas, though you will need your passport.

I did this crossing several years ago when you had to leave your passport with the Zimbabwean officials to look around on the Zambian side but we live in different times.
