Pilots turned around a plane mid-flight when a man collapsed and later died on Thursday evening.
Tiger Airways flight TT536 left Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport at 7.15pm bound for Brisbane.
About 45 minutes into the flight, crew members became aware one of the passengers was in the middle of a medical emergency. The crew administered first aid and called for assistance from any medical practitioners on board.
Two passengers on the flight were professional nurses and tried to help the ill passenger.
The pilots turned the plane around and returned to Tullamarine at 8.42pm where medical specialists were waiting to treat the man.
Passengers were taken off the plane and police then confirmed the man had died, radio station 3AW reported.
The flight from Melbourne was rescheduled for 10.30pm and the one returning from Brisbane was moved to 1.30am.
