Three Queensland tourism businesses have been recognised for their innovation within the industry.

Longreach family-owned business Kinnon & Co. was awarded the Queensland Tourism Industry Council's Innovation in Tourism prize at a breakfast in Brisbane on Tuesday.

The business received $25,000 for its new tribute show the Starlight Spectacular, which chronicles the legend of Captain Starlight, a local cattle thief in the 1870s.

Judges said Kinnon & Co. combined traditional storytelling, modern technologies and the natural environment to deliver a unique outback experience.

Second prize was awarded to Cairns Zoom, a wildlife dome located on top of the Cairns Reef Hotel Casino.

Surfers Paradise Alliance was Highly Commended for its development of a two-part "measurement instrument" that can be used to calculate attendance figures and the economic impact of certain events and attractions.

Tourism accounts for 124,000 jobs in Queensland and contributes $8.4 billion to the state's economy, according to industry council figures.

"The prize Innovation in tourism reinforces the value of continually innovating in order to cultivate industry prosperity," the council's chief executive Daniel Gschwind said.
