On most cruise ships, dinner followed by a show is the order of the evening. On the Celebrity Edge, a new ship debuting in December 2018, passengers will enjoy both at the same time.

This week the cruise line unveiled Eden, a combination dining and entertainment venue aboard their first Edge class vessel.

It's nature-themed as you may have surmised, with a living tree in the dining area (a hallmark of Celebrity's Solstice class ships) and ample views of the ocean provided by 650 square metres of windows.

That's more outward-facing glass than any other room at sea.

Calling Eden a room is somewhat misleading though, since the massive venue spans three decks at the aft of the ship.

The multi-use space includes lounge areas, a cafe, a demonstration kitchen for cooking classes, a cocktail bar, and the Eden restaurant which hosts immersive theatrical dinners.

Not sure what that means? Imagine an updated cabaret where the culinary and entertainment portions of the evening are more intertwined than usual.

Throughout the meal, costumed performers called Edenists move freely between tables.

They sing, dance, perform magic and do cirque-style acrobatics.

They also serve the food, which is a spectacle unto itself.

Each dish has some theatrical element that unfolds at the table: a cold seafood starter is served in a scooped-out sea urchin shell, set over a bowl of live fish, and then has dry ice shaved over it to create a waterfall of smoke.

A chocolate cake arrives hidden under a pink chocolate dome; when warm chocolate syrup is poured over it in an X-shape, the dome melts and opens like the petals of a flower.

Eden is one of the ship's premium restaurants so these dinners will come at a cost.

Celebrity is still finalising the price, but passengers can rest assured they'll be paying for the most memorable meal of the cruise.
