Credo Cottages, Victoria accommodation review: Weekend away

Credo Cottages Olinda

Credo Cottages Olinda

The location

Olinda, east of Melbourne, bustles like few towns in the Dandenongs. Whether it's for coffee, lunch or a browse of the gift and antique shops scattered about like throw cushions, nobody seems just to drive through this town.

The place

There are four Credo Cottages, each with slight variances, but all are loaded with luxury items such as leather couches and spa baths. Despite the cottages being located just off the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, they are situated in the bush and enjoy views of towering Mountain Ash trees. The cottages have either gas log ovens or fireplaces - essential in winter - and some also have outdoor areas including a spa pool for the warmer months. The cottage owners say their stylish accommodation is free of chintzy tendencies; that is, there's "no emphasis on olde world" trimmings.

The experience

It's not much of a drive from Melbourne, so you should jump back in the car and potter about. Puffing Billy, the beloved steam train, is 10 minutes' away, and the William Ricketts Sanctuary and the Sky High lookout are even closer.

Don't miss

Take a wander to the National Rhododendron Gardens, a 10-minute walk away, and get lost among the 40 hectares of azaleas, camellias, cherries, daffodils and, of course, rhododendrons.
