Crowne Plaza Changi Airport: World's best airport completes world's best airport hotel

Crowne Changi offers plenty of ways to relax while awaiting your flight.

Crowne Changi offers plenty of ways to relax while awaiting your flight.

It's an airport hotel, but not as you know it – and now it's almost doubled in size with the opening of a new 10-storey extension.

Singapore architects WOHA, responsible for the fabulous diaphanous main building of the Crowne Plaza Changi Airport with its gorgeous outer membrane regulating heat and noise, have created the new wing containing 243 rooms, bringing the room count to 563 in readiness for the opening of Terminal 4 Jewel Changi Airport within the next few years.

In keeping with the overall theme of the hotel at Singapore Airlines' home airport, the new wing is as functional as it is funky. All rooms have in-built USB charging ports, fast and powerful free Wi-Fi, a spacious desk with a Herman Miller ergonomic swivel chair, mobile handy phone with complimentary unlimited local and IDD calls, wireless printing from room to the self-collect point at the Business Centre, a 40-inch smart LED television with Miracast and Airplay-enabled functions, Klipsch Bluetooth-enabled speaker and more.

The room itself is smarter than your average, with polymer dispersed liquid crystal film-enabled switchable privacy smart glass panels separating the bedroom and bathroom and day and blackout blinds for those any-time-of-day stopovers.

It's not all business though. This is a fun hotel, with stimulating design touches throughout. An ever changing parade of points of interest in public areas comprises local art, both modern and traditional, colourful tiles evocative of Singapore's heritage, a bar with little nooks, crannies and a pool table decorated in '80s nightclub pop-art style, and one of the truly great hotel pools.

In an enormous courtyard with one wall open to the runways and control tower, it features a series of wooden jetties and a labyrinth of planter pots full of lush vegetation that you can swim among or relax in little hidden alcoves with inbuilt seating.

Features include the en-suite, free-standing rain shower and big, deep separate bathtub, perfect for soaking out long-haul muscle kinks, with bathroom amenities by Orla Kiely.

Also appreciated by the long-haul brigade: the hotel's direct connection to the departure hall, lots of open air walkways and greenery that restore a sense of connection to the world at large, and easy proximity to an MRT stop.
