Disney fires first shot as theme park war heats up

The latest expansion of Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim, near Los Angeles, is the new Cars Land attraction, set to open June 15, Disney officials said Friday, as the park offered a peek at one of the biggest attractions featured in the $US1 billion expansion.

The 12-acre Cars Land, featuring the characters from the Disney-Pixar film Cars, will open with several new restaurants and three rides, including Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, Luigi's Flying Tires and Radiator Springs Racers.

The most elaborate and anticipated attraction is Radiator Springs Racers, in which small, convertible cars carry passengers around realistic-looking buttes and canyons. Next door at Disneyland, the Matterhorn ride, which has been undergoing a six-month renovation project, is scheduled to open by June 15 as well.

The opening of Cars Land sets the stage for this summer's battle of the Southern California theme parks.

Universal Studios Hollywood is scheduled on May 25 to unveil its latest attraction, Transformers: The Ride 3D, an attraction that features the Autobots and Decepticons characters from the Transformers movies.

It's a thrill ride that carries guests along a track and envelops them in the world of transformers using special effects and high-definition 3-D technology.

In Valencia, California, Six Flags Magic Mountain plans to open on May 28 its newest attraction, Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom, which is billed as the world's tallest vertical-drop ride.
