This four-day electronic music event takes place at Lexton in the Victorian forest. International artists include Shpongle, Hallucinogen and Astrix. The festival runs from January 27-30 and tickets cost from $350. See rainbowserpent.net

3. FALL OF SINGAPORE COMMEMORATIONS, SINGAPORE

7. NEW ORLEANS JAZZ FESTIVAL, LOUISIANA, US

Next year's New Orleans Jazzfest falls just a couple of days after the late, great Ella Fitzgerald's 100th birthday. The festival runs from April 28-May 7 and the Ella tributes will be overflowing amid the modern and traditional jazz, zydeco, pop, soul, rap and rock performances. See nojazzfest.com

9. UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL, CARDIFF, WALES

For the very first time, in June next year, the European Champions League football final is being held in Wales at Cardiff's fabulous Millennium (or Principality) Stadium. 10. SCOTT JOPLIN RAGTIME FESTIVAL, SEDALIA, MISSOURI

It's the 100th anniversary of the death of Scott Joplin, best known as composer of The Entertainer, the theme from the movie The Sting. His home town will be ramping things up for its annual ragtime festival, held this year from June 1 to 3. Search facebook.com

11. AMERICA'S CUP, BERMUDA

13. WOMEN'S CRICKET WORLD CUP, ENGLAND

14. TOTAL ECLIPSE, US

A total solar eclipse, when the moon completely blocks the sun, comes but rarely. The next one will be visible on August 21, 2017 in parts of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. 15. WOMEN'S RUGBY WORLD CUP, IRELAND

16. PRINCESS DIANA MEMORIAL GARDEN

Plans to create a memorial garden at Kensington Palace, former home of Princess Diana, are still in the early stages but it should open to the public on August 21, the 20th anniversary of her death in 1997. See hrp.org.uk

17. BATTLE OF PASSCHENDAELE COMMEMORATION, YPRES, BELGIUM

Thousands of Australian soldiers were killed and wounded in this brutal WWI battle. Commemorative tours for the centenary on October 12 will culminate in a service on the battlefield. See: battlefields.com.au
