Everyone Asks: Does travel insurance cover delays caused by terrorism-related incidents?

By Michael Gebicki

"In the wake of incidents in Europe's tourist hotspots, some travellers are finding out the hard way," according to Bessie Hassan, Insurance Expert at finder.com.au. "It depends on the insurer, but most insurers won't cover cancellation costs that are a direct result of a terrorist incident. However, some do offer limited cover, so read the fine print." If the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) issues a travel warning on its Smartraveller website in response to a terrorist incident and you decide to change your travel plans, beware since "some policies do not offer refunds when the safety and security environment overseas changes", according to DFAT. If your insurer does offer cover for such situations, you will need to have your travel insurance already locked in before DFAT upgrades its travel advice, which is another reason to buy travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. The finder.com.au page on Terrorism and Travel Insurance has a rundown of the major travel insurers' policies relating to cover for terrorist-related events.
