Expat tips: South Lombok, Indonesia

WHO

Annalise Fleming, 33, sales and marketing manager

FROM

Toowoomba, Queensland. In south Lombok for two years

SEE

The must-see here is without a doubt Selong Belanak beach. It is one of the most stunningly pristine beaches in the world – crystal-clear water, silica white sand and usually only a handful of people.

DO

I find my balance between surfing and yoga. Lombok has many amazing breaks but I would highly recommend Serangan, which is a bay over from Selong Belanak. It has one of the best right-handers. Yoga in the afternoon at Sempiak Villas is metres from the beach and a great way to unwind after work, sempiakvillas.com

EAT

Nothing compares to the bay view from the restaurant Aura, at Selong Selo Residences. Sunset is the ideal time and as night approaches, hundreds of lights from local fishing boats appear in the ocean, which emulate the stars. My go-to dish is the gulai kambing (lamb curry): it has a perfect balance of Indonesian flavours. The soto ayam (chicken soup) is my light option, selongselo.com/aura/

DRINK

While I am now quite accustomed to the local Bintang beer on the beach, a watermelon margarita at Mexican in Town, Kuta, Lombok, is possibly one of the most refreshing drinks and is complemented by some delicious Mexican delights.

AVOID

Riding scooters at night. The roads are a little hairy and there is a lack of street lights so you need to be alert to avoid the people, animals, gravel, potholes and other motorists. Helmets should also not be optional.
