Expert Opinion, Chris Noone: Is it possible to avoid peak car-hire charges?

By Michael Gebicki

Q. Is it possible to avoid higher car hire charges in busy holiday periods?

A. Yes. While it's to be expected that a higher demand for car rental means an increase in car rental prices, there are still ways to get a good deal. Finding lower prices during peak periods such as the Easter, Christmas and school holidays is possible, you just have to be organised and prepared to think outside of the box. My main advice would be to book as far in advance as possible for the best deals, and to ensure you get the car you want. Booking at the last minute will usually mean paying higher prices and having less choice. While there are ways of reducing costs, traditional car rental companies are notorious for hiking prices around busy periods. To truly avoid higher prices, try a peer-to-peer car rental company which provides access to vehicles from corporate fleets and private owners. They are usually cheaper year round, especially during peak periods, and have a far wider range of cars available.
