Expert opinion, photojournalist Ewen Bell: Is a smartphone the best for taking travel photos?

By Michael Gebicki

Q Is there any reason to take anything better than a smartphone for my travel happy snaps?

Smartphones are a dream for travellers as they not only take great photos, but your images are easily uploaded and shared to be enjoyed. You always have it on you and they're easy to manage, with no special skills required. If you enjoy the art of photography then a dedicated and more capable camera does make sense. Mirrorless or DSLR cameras will give you more creative control, allowing you to play with shutter speeds and depth of field, but with considerably less convenience. That's the price you pay for quality and creativity. Photography is not always about the photo, of course, and for many of us the art of capturing images is as much a journey as the travel itself.
