Fifty Shades of Grey hotel: The Heathman Hotel, Portland, Oregon lets fans live out fantasy

A luxury boutique hotel in Portland, Oregon is hoping to seduce FiftyShades of Grey fans with special packages inspired by the novel and now movie, although some guests are reportedly taking the experience a little too far.

The Heathman Hotel, in Portland's hipster downtown district, is where some of the novel and the movie's steamy scenes are set.

Although most of the BDSM-tinged sex scenes occur elsewhere, the story has driven couples to visit the Heathman.

The hotel gets mentioned 18 times in the book, as central characters Anastasia Steele and her billionaire friend-with-benefits Christian Grey meet for the second time to have photos taken for an article she is writing.

Later, a rendezvous in Heathman's elevator No. 3 precedes dinner in a second-floor private dining room. What do they eat? Oysters, of course.

Tourists are allowed to take a peek inside the building and take photos or, erm, ride in the lift, but there is also an opportunity for guests to recreate their own fantasies with special do-it-yourself packages that the hotel offers.

Big spenders looking to recreate Steele's birthday party in Portland can opt for the Heathman's 'Charlie Tango No Limits' package. At $US2750, it includes appetisers and wine for a group of six, a helicopter tour of Portland, roses for the ladies, dinner at the hotel, and limo transfers to the helipad. Rooms are extra.

The 'Inner Goddess' add-on package includes a chilled bottle of Boedecker Pinot Gris, the same bottle shared by the main characters, wrapped in a grey neck tie. Warning: said wine gave Steele a shattering hangover and, no doubt, a few regrets.

For those with more limited budgets or in need of Dutch courage, they've also created a special FiftyShades cocktail of gin, fresh tangerine, pomegranate juice, lemon, and fresh thyme available for purchase at the bar.

Although most of the couples seeking a pleasurable experience at the Heathman have been sated, some have sought to take the kinky adventure out of the bedroom and into the hotel's public areas made infamous in the book, according to one guest's TripAdvisor review.

The guest commented they wanted to see "what the fuss was all about" and was "not disappointed by hotel or staff", however "FiftyShades books have been great for business even though it came with a bit of a price (shenanigans in the elevators and on the grand staircase)."

Overall, the hotel is given 4.5 out of 5 stars by reviewers on TripAdvisor, with 763 of the 1126 reviews rating it as "excellent".

If FiftyShades doesn't blow your dress up, tours of Twilight locations are also a big hit in Portland. You can even stay at a hotel where people re-enact fetish sex scenes from hit fan-fiction based on the Twilight characters.
