NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE

As a lover of country music, I found myself submerged in the rich roots of American country 24 hours a day. I had heard of neon lights and honky tonk bars through song but seeing it in real life was satisfying. The real deal was a buzz but also grounding. I realised country music is about people's life stories … their hardships, heartbreaks and good times. The dog doesn't always die! – and I'll write my country songs about my people, land and stories.

NEW YORK CITY

I've always dreamed of a white Christmas in New York. It wasn't Christmas but getting there itself was as good as it gets. I felt like I was in Gotham City. It was huge, busy – the nightlife was as busy as the day. I felt like I was in a movie setting all day. A great experience, quite the opposite to our little farm near Albury and the old saying "two worlds apart" rang loud and clear. As eye-opening as it was, it made me realise how lucky I am to have a quiet patch to sit and think and write. New York would be too distracting.

NEW ZEALAND

A songwriting trip to New Zealand was wonderful. The country was beautiful and breathtaking. My memories were scattered notes of songwriting efforts mixed with youth and not missing out on stuff. Parasailing and white water rafting were some of the adventures that I'm glad I had the courage to do. It brought out the "fearless" in me. Something that deep down was good for me. I struggle on stage with nerves … and I know I need to use my fear in a positive way. Fear keeps you alert and keeps you human. Thank-you Queenstown for bringing out the daredevil in me.

UPPER MURRAY

I love the drive around this area. The Murray River is wide and clear and I always envy any property I drive past that has a little creek running through. We used to visit my grandparents who lived in Holbrook. We would go for drives and find safe little creeks to splash in. It had a huge impact on my love for the river and still does. I will one day own a little property with a creek/river running through – even better – near the Mitta Mitta hotel. I will, I will, I will …

NORTHERN TERRITORY

The drive from Katherine to Kununurra is a travelling treat. Passing the bends of the Big Victoria River, seeing glimpses of croc-infested waters surrounded by landscapes that you can only find in the territory – it's a drive that demands respect for country and its wildlife and its people. These little moments on the road make my job worth it. And if you can't make it there in person, I can sing it to you through song.
