It might just be the ultimate travel experience: being an expat. Living in a foreign country. Packing your bags and leaving behind family and friends to immerse yourself in another culture. Sometimes to start a whole new life.

Being an expat lets you get to know the true intricacies of a place. You're not in the tourist bubble anymore, you're living a normal life. You see the good, and you see the bad. You get to meet interesting people and eat amazing food and maybe discover a whole new attitude towards the world.

You also realise that sometimes even the simplest chore – something as easy as posting a letter – becomes a whole lot more difficult when you shift yourself to the other side of the world.

On this episode of Flight of Fancy: the Traveller.com.au podcast, we're examining life as an expat: the good, the bad, and the ugly. What's it really like to live in another country? What jobs can you do? How do you make friends? Is it really living the dream, or can it become a nightmare?

To help break this subject down, Flight of Fancy host Ben Groundwater is joined by two Traveller writers with vast experience in expat life: Ute Junker, who once called Germany home, and Catherine Marshall, who shifted her life from South Africa across to Australia.

Is living as an expat the ultimate travel experience? We're about to find out.
