Lounge access No. The flight arrives at the low-cost terminal LCCT in Kuala Lumpur, which is about 50 minutes from central KL. It is airconditioned with a scattering of shops. The nearest bar is a 10-minute hike or a shuttle bus trip across the terminal, although Air Asia X has plans to move to Kuala Lumpur's main air terminal next year.

Aircraft condition Very good. Fleet is near-new.

Entertainment This is a no-frills airline. Passengers trade the usual extras expected on a long-haul flight — such as an in-built entertainment system — for a low fare. In premium economy and economy you can hire a portable e-player for 35 ringgit ($11), 30 ringgit if pre-booked, with noise-cancelling headphones. It has a choice of seven current movies and TV shows and a wider range of music but the seat has a socket for other equipment so you can bring your own entertainment.

Comfort The highlight of premium economy is the flat-bed seat. Passengers are snug in a sleek, silver cubicle with buttons to three positions: sitting, reclining and lying down.

Service Attentive and friendly.

Food and beverages The airline is without champagne or white linen in any class. Economy passengers need to pay for food and drink but premium economy comes with a complimentary meal (two on longer flights) worth 12 ringgit ($3.70) each and a (soft) drink from a menu that spans numerous cuisines including nasi lemak, Malaysia's national dish. A basic beverage selection consists of Carlsberg beer (12 ringgit) and Jacob's Creek wine (18-30 ringgit).

Flight frequency Daily Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur. The AirAsia X long-haul A330s and A340s have two classes - premium economy and economy. Premium economy fare from about $2656, economy $683. Fares are return, including tax.
