Sydneysiders have awoken to a dense blanket of fog that has disrupted airports and ferries.

Flights have been suspended for safety reasons while some ferries on the Parramatta River have been delayed, with morning commuters being warned to expect ongoing delays.

Passengers at Sydney Airport have been advised to contact individual airlines for information about their flights.

"Fog is present at Sydney Airport and may cause disruptions to airline flight schedules," Sydney Airport Corporation Limited said in a statement this morning.

"Full operations will resume as soon as the fog lifts."

A Qantas spokesman said five flights due to land in Sydney had to be diverted to other airports.

The diverted flights are:

- QF108 from LA
- QF118 from Wellington
- QF24 from Bangkok
- QF 501 from Brisbane
- QF408 from Melbourne

"We're also expecting delays because of congestion around Sydney Airport," he said.

A Jetstar spokesman said several flights in and out of Sydney were delayed.

After 9am he said the fog was starting to clear.

"We're working to get people to their destinations."

Operations were expected to return to normal later this morning, he said.

Earlier in the morning, Sydney Ferry services on the Parramatta River were temporarily suspended because of the safety issues caused by the dense fog.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the fog would continue throughout the morning, with cloud increasing during the day.

"Areas of rain [will] develop in the late afternoon or evening," its website said.
