Four Points By Sheraton, Brisbane hotel review: Weekend away

The location

Brisbane's CBD changes character on weekends, as the hurrying people in suits are replaced by shoppers, tourists and assorted dawdlers. This is a good time to explore the city: not only is the mood more relaxed, many hotels offer lower rates on Friday and Saturday nights.

The place

Four Points by Sheraton caters primarily to business travellers. The rooms are modestly proportioned, with streamlined decor and comfortable beds. Some have excellent views over the city or the Brisbane River. The hotel has a well-equipped gym. The staff - many of them young - are keen to please and genuinely friendly, which is appreciated, whether you're returning from a round of meetings or from shopping in the Queen Street Mall.

The experience

Central Brisbane has much to offer on weekends. From Four Points, cross the river - if you're feeling energetic, you can walk over either the Victoria or Goodwill bridges - to the South Bank precinct, home of the fabulous Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art, as well as the Queensland Museum and Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Adjoining parkland encompasses cafes and market stalls, not to mention a man-made lagoon and beach.

Closer to the hotel, in Eagle Street, markets operate on Sundays. To explore further afield, go to the Eagle Street Pier and jump on one of the "City Cats" that ply the river.

Don't miss

The Weeping Fig Avenue in the 18-hectare City Botanic Gardens is a short stroll from Four Points. Bordered by the river, Brisbane's oldest park was originally planted with food crops by convicts in 1825, and selected as the site for a public garden three years later. On Saturdays, free guided walks leave from the Rotunda at 11am and 1pm.
