HOTEL

Some people are hotel people, others prefer to stay with friends: I am a hotel fanatic. My current favourite is The Upper House, Hong Kong, a hyper-modern hotel in a hyper-modern city. Run by Dean Winter, it successfully combines great design with technology - even room service is ordered via iPod. The bars and restaurants are vibrant and stylish. I feel like an extra in a sci-fi movie whenever I stay.

AIRLINE

Singapore Airlines, not surprisingly, as I have been a wine consultant to the airline for more than 20 years. Their business and first class are highly addictive with expansive flat beds, large TV screens, hundreds of movies and ever attentive yet discreet service.

RESORT

Bali's Amankila is hard to beat. Located near Manggis in the remote east, it has a wonderful beach club, expansive day beds, relaxed but excellent food, villas with private plunge pools overarched by quiet but charming service. If I died and the Amankila was heaven, I would be content.

LUGGAGE

I use a mid-size Victorinox suitcase that allows me to keep most clothes on lightweight hangers in a suit bag. The rest go into zip-up Eagle Creek cubes - a brilliant system edging near to travel perfection. My hand luggage is also Victorinox - an "office" wheeler which fits three bottles of wine upright in the back compartment. Sadly, it's only for domestic travel now liquids are banned on international flights.

KIT

I wish my treasure was a volume of Sun Tzu's Art of War or a yoga mat but my friend and accessory is my MacBook Air - the ultimate travelling device for entertainment, research and communication.
