Gold Coast flights halted as waters rise

By Stephen Cauchi

Extreme winds have resulted in Qantas, Jetstar and Tiger Airways cancelling all services in and out of the Gold Coast for the remainder of the day.

Virgin Australia, meanwhile says flights currently suspended could resume if the weather improves later on Monday.

Virgin Australia spokesman Luke O'Donnell said the airline was "asking passengers to keep focused on our alerts page, which is being updated as soon as we get a cancellation through".

Brisbane Airport remains open but there are many delayed and cancelled flights across all airlines heading out of the city.

Leonie Vandeven from Brisbane Airport Corporation says customers should check the status of their flights online with their respective airlines, as call centres are experiencing considerable delays.

Brisbane airport is also suffering a large number of cancelled, delayed or rescheduled flights.

A number of flights to and from Ballina airport in Byron Bay – mostly flights to or from Newcastle and Sydney – have also been cancelled.
