Australia's ancient, iconic rock has met cutting-edge technology with Google revealing you can now explore Uluru via its Street View mapping service.

The 348-metre high monolith can now be explored in 360-degrees from the comfort of your home (or office) via a desktop computer, tablet or smartphone.

The project took two years to complete, through collaboration with the traditional owners of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, the Anangu, along with Parks Australia and the Northern Territory Government.

Google says it was careful to capture Uluru according to the Anangu's traditional Tjukurpa law. As such, you won't find about 40 per cent of the rock on Street View, as these sacred sites around the 9.4km base of the rock should not be photographed. You also won't find the views from the top of the rock, since climbing Uluru is discouraged by the locals (though technically still permitted - for now).

The Street View experience will take you through the views of Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, the the Kuniya Walk, the Kapi Mutitjulu waterhole and the ancient rock art at Kulpi Mutitjulu (Family Cave).

The Street View also features audio guides, with stories and songs from the traditional owners.

Uluru as a tourist destination has been revitalised in recent years, with new projects such as the first drone video of the rock and Bruce Munro's Field of Light - a huge installation featuring 50,000 stems of light. Originally scheduled to end in April this year, Field of Light has been extended until March 2018.
