Hawaii for all age groups

Can you tell us which of Hawaii's islands is best suited to a family of all age groups?

MY HUSBAND AND I ARE HEADING FOR HAWAII FOR 2½ WEEKS IN AUGUST, ACCOMPANIED BY MY SISTER-IN-LAW AND THREE KIDS. WE ADULTS ARE IN OUR 50s AND THE KIDS ARE IN THEIR EARLY/MID-20s. WE ARE THINKING OF STAYING ON TWO OR THREE DIFFERENT ISLANDS AND RENTING A LARGE HOUSE, BUT AREN'T SURE WHICH OF THE ISLANDS WOULD BE THE MOST INTERESTING FOR ALL AGES. WE ARE SURFERS, SNORKELLERS, WALKERS, SHOPPERS AND SIGHTSEERS.

K. DEAR, NEWPORT

I like the island of Kauai, and so does almost everyone else. It's the tropical book of earthly wonders - rainforests, soaring cliffs hung with rainbows, mountains, beaches made in heaven and no building taller than a coconut tree. The place to stay is somewhere close to the town of Hanalei, which is the gateway to the beautiful Na Pali Coast. Hanalei is also the biking, hiking, snorkelling and diving capital of Kauai.

Another good option would be the Big Island, with its volcano and wonderful underwater attractions. On the island's west coast, one of Kona's outstanding experiences is a snorkelling trip with giant manta rays. There's more superb snorkelling at Kealakekua Bay and Honaunau Bay. On the island's east coast, Hilo is the gateway to Hawaii Volcano National Park.

To satisfy the shoppers, hit Oahu, but make it the tail end of your trip. Waikiki is the obvious place to stay. See gohawaii.com for more information.
