How good are LATAM Airlines really?

My husband and I are looking at a tour to Santiago, Buenos Aires, Rio, Iguassu Falls, Lima and the Galapagos. How good is LATAM Airlines, and what is a weather-wise time to visit these places? M. Munier, Baulkam Hills, NSW

On the Skytrax Airline Quality website airlinequality.com/, LATAM gets an overall rating of 5/10.

That's not great but it's notable that most of the lower ratings relate to internal flights within South America.

LATAM's intercontinental flights generally rate higher.

However, there is not a wide choice of airlines operating between Australia and South America.

There really is no bad time to visit the Galapagos from the point of view of climate as weather is relatively stable; however, the birds and animals that live there have their own cycle.

At different times of the year you'll see whales, turtles laying eggs or hatchlings heading to the sea or albatrosses performing courtship rituals.

For the other areas on your list, March is perfect.

Outside the really hot summer period for the major cities and after the main tourist season, usually after the rainy season at Iguassu yet still high water flows, and before the cooler weather fogs the skies in Lima.

Easter falls on April 1 next year and it's a huge and vivid celebration – keep that in mind when you plan your trip.

TIPOLOGIST

If your hotel room isn't up to scratch, if the airline loses your bag, if a tour operator doesn't deliver, document their shortcomings. Take photos, get the facts in writing and take down names. If you need to seek compensation, records will ease the process.
