Is this the world's greatest hotel concierge?

Lots of hotels operate a "whatever you want, whenever you want it" policy as an indicator of the level of service they can provide.

But just how far would a concierge go to make a guest happy? A woman who checked into a hotel in Texas found out this week.

While bored and on a business trip, Sarah Kovacs Grzywacz received a text message from the Hotel Indigo San Antonio Riverwalk suggesting that staff could assist her with "anything, anytime".

Ms Grzywacz decided that what would really improve her stay would be for a framed photograph of Nicolas Cage, the actor, to be placed beside her bed. Specifically - the text did say anything – a picture of Nicolas Cage in a white vest, playing a convict with a big heart in the film Con Air.

The hotel's concierge Ramon replied to say it would be his pleasure to assist and Ms Grzywacz was delighted to find on her return that her unusual request had been granted.

Emboldened, she went on to request another picture of the Hollywood star, this time as he appeared in Moonstruck, and this time, stuck to her bathroom mirror. She also asked for some bath towels and demanded both by 6pm.

Although her deadline was not quite met, Ramon, in carrying out her request, was at least apologetic.

Finally, Ms Grzywacz tried to push her luck one last time and asked for a photo of the actor in 8MM. "Good choice," Ramon replied. The image soon appeared taped to the television.

Ms Grzywacz posted photos showing her concierge's dedication on her Imgur account and they have since been widely shared on social media. Both she and the hotel deny that Ramon's good intentions were for the purposes of a publicity stunt.

Instead, she was merely "bored at work with someone else who was bored at work."

Hotels all around the world now make a point of offering the services of concierges who are willing, so they claim, to do anything for their guests, with concierges dedicated to running baths, or looking after guests' children and pets.

The strangest concierge requests

A man wearing the uniform of the Hungarian Hussars

Marta Andrasi, the chief concierge at the magnificent Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest, said that she had answered plenty of unconventional demands.

They included one request for a fleet of 40 identically painted bicycles within two hours of asking, and another for a wake up call from somebody wearing the red uniform of an officer of the Hungarian Hussars - a male guest wanted to surprise his girlfriend and then propose to her. Remarkably, she said yes.

A fish sitter

Hugo de Castro, a concierge at the Grand Jersey hotel in St Helier, told AOL Travel about one rather eccentric regular. "There is one lady who lives in South Africa and comes to stay with us every year," he said. "She loves fish and aquariums and each year she goes into town to buy a fish then brings it back to the hotel and asks me to look after it. She specifies that it must live in Evian water so she leaves me some money to buy bottles of water and I look after little Freddie until she returns again."

A back waxer

AOL also heard from Dean Culpan, operations manager at The Grosvenor Hotel in London. "One of the most unusual requests I have ever had was when I was asked to wax a client's back – not my favourite experience I must say," he said.

Ice - 'for my penguins'

IndependentTraveler.com quizzed Lauri Howe at the Seaport Boston hotel. "The most memorable request for us is the guest who asked for 20 pounds of ice for his penguins," she said. "The penguins were part of an exhibit at the Boston Globe Travel Show. They stayed in the bath tub when they weren't on display at the show. Twenty pounds of ice actually isn't too much, and we have multiple ice machines at Seaport, so we filled up four bags for them."

A pair of falcons

According to AOL Travel, a Dubai Sheikh at The Cadogan in Knightsbridge asked staff to find him two falcons - one male and one female. After a week the hotel eventually tracked down a pair - in Dubai. The Sheikh returned home to find them waiting for him.

100 plastic flamingos

Continuing the avian theme is Allison Scott of The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. "One hundred plastic pink flamingos were placed in a room at a guest request as a practical joke," she told IndependentTraveler.com. "We aren't sure why the guest wanted them, but they were scattered everywhere - tub, bed, desk."

Distilled water to shower in

It will surprise no-one to discover that Californian hotels receive more than their fair share of fussy guests.

The Mandarin Oriental San Francisco has received the following odd requests, according to AOL:

"Distilled water to shower with."

"A certain type of yogurt be flown in from a particular farm in New Jersey."

"Berries in a bowl served for breakfast are all the same size in dimension before being presented to the guest."

"A real grass patch to be brought to their room so that their pet can relieve itself on the grass rather than being brought outside."

A sky written apology

The Ritz-Carlton Marina del Rey in LA has also received a couple of belters:

"Sky writing a plea of forgiveness over a major theme park for a husband trying to get in contact with his wife without a cell phone."

"Another guest wanted live reptiles and animals on a yacht charter in the Marina. It happened."

A taxi for a tiger

Maite Foriasky, head concierge at The Setai in Miami's South Beach, told Forbes about a guest who asked the hotel to ship a tiger to London with two days' notice. A British guest had become smitten with a local lady, but she would only move to London with him if she could take her pet tiger.

Two rooms - 'one for my wife, one for my mistress'

Gold Coast Tourism in Australia unearthed some of the most unusual requests made by guests at Queensland's five-star hotels and resorts, including one Lothario who asked for two rooms on different floors to accommodate both his wife and his mistress.

A herd of alpacas

According to Gold Coast Tourism, a Middle Eastern family asked staff at another hotel to purchase a herd of alpacas for them.

Staff at a third were asked to fill in as best man and bridesmaid for a couple renewing their wedding vows.

Chaperones for sex addicts

Research by the hotel chain Best Western has also revealed some particularly unusual requests, including a support group for sex addicts who demanded a selection of single rooms, and a member of staff, or chaperone, to ensure each delegate made it to bed alone.

It added that a group of adult male guests once asked staff for a private meeting room where they would be allowed to wear baby grows.

Another customer, who had been tasked with arranging a lawnmower convention, enquired about the possibility of mowing the grounds of the hotel, so guests could try out the various models on display.

Reiki for dogs

One group of animal-lovers requested reiki classes for their pets, and another asked for a host of twin rooms, so guests and their dogs could each have their own bed.

It also claimed that a party of travellers insisted on a menu consisting entirely of blue food.
