I have the wonderful good fortune of being taken to new restaurants by locals every time I am there. Tsurutontan (3-14-12 Roppongi, Minato-ku, see tsurutontan-udon.jp) is in the heart of Roppongi and serves huge bowls of steaming udon noodles in myriad combinations, with pictures of the food for the non-Japanese. One of my favourite meals ever was at Tokyo's Sushi Saito (1-9-15, Akasaka, Minato). The menu is chosen for you at this absolutely sublime, tiny and three Michelin-starred restaurant. The price is not for the faint-hearted but is worth every cent.
Naomichi Yasuda, New York's favourite Michelin-starred sushi chef, has returned to Tokyo to refine his craft at Yasuda (Minami-Aoyama, B1, 426 2-6 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, see sushibaryasuda.com). His 14-seat, keenly-priced restaurant is run with warmth and charm. If you find you need a break from Japanese food, Golden Brown Burgers (Omotesando Hills, 3rd floor, 4-12-10, Jingumae, see goldenbrown.info) serves what the Japanese also do well - take something from somewhere else and make it better.
For shopping, head to J-Period (Omotesando Hills B2F, 4-12-10 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, see j-period.com/en/) for well-priced traditional Japanese ceramics. For its men's department and food halls alone, visit the department store Isetan (see isetan.co.jp).
Tsutaya Daikanyama (Daikanyama, 150-003, Tokyo Shibuya-ku, 17-5 Sarugakucho, se store.tsutaya.co.jp) is the future of bookstores. I challenge you not to leave laden with books, DVDs and magazines.
Meanwhile, Kiddy Land (various outlets, kiddyland.co.jp/en/), has reached near mythical status with our children and their friends.
