Superman and Iron Man may be able to fly around the world on their own, but when it comes to soaring through the skies, poor Spider-Man has to fly on a budget airline.

At least, that's what happened this week when 40 Spider-Men boarded a Jetstar Japan plane for the airline's first Tokyo to Osaka flight.

The Airbus A320 has been decked out with special Spider-Man livery to mark the upcoming release of the new movie Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Forty Spider-Men (including a few Spider-Women) winners were selected to board the flight after the airline ran a competition inviting potential passengers to upload a picture of themselves striking a Spidey pose, in costume.

The flight took off from Tokyo with the 40 Spider-Men, along with regular (and probably surprised) passengers for the 90-minute flight to Osaka on Wednesday morning.

It's not the first time a Japan-based airline has done up a plane to tie in with a movie release. In September, 2015 ANA unveiled its R2-D2-themed 787 Dreamliner, decked out in Star Wars livery. It later added a BB-8 themed Boeing 777. The R2-D2 plane can occasionally be spotted at Sydney Airport when flying the Sydney-Tokyo route.

The Star Wars planes are part of a five-year deal with the franchise through its own, Disney.

Back in 2013, Air New Zealand were one of the first airlines to get in on the act by repainting one of its Boeing 777 with the dragon Smaug, as seen in The Hobbit movies directed by Kiwi Peter Jackson.
