To photobomb, as described in the dictionary, is to "spoil a photograph of (a person or thing) by unexpectedly appearing in the camera's field of view as the picture is taken, typically as a prank or practical joke".

It can come in many forms. A drunken relative behind a bride or groom gurning at the camera, or unsuspecting bystanders who happen to be in the right place at the wrong time.

But for Tammy Ricks, her photobomb while in Puerto Rico came in a more unlikely form - a leaping iguana.

Ricks was getting ready for that all-important Instagram moment at El Morro, a 16th-century fort in San Juan, when she noticed a lizard next to her. Thinking nothing of it, she had the pose ready; her friend had the camera ready to go and click! It was at that exact moment the iguana decided to make an unexpected leap into frame.

"What caught me by surprise is when he flew into the air right in front of me!" Ricks told Stuff.

The Phoenix, Arizona native and her best friend didn't realise the moment was captured until later.

"Afterwards we decided to grab a bite to eat in Old San Juan. We sat at an outdoor patio table ... and we decided to review the photos to see what was captured. When we got to that one, we both turned to each other and were like were OMG, I can't believe it!"

Thinking that it would amuse her friends and family, she posted it online. Then it started getting worldwide attention.

"I thought it was a funny and unique capture, so I posted it to my Facebook and my Instagram account. Then I decided to post it to Imgur, where it had over 100,000 views in 10 hours! Then someone else took my photo and shared it to Reddit where it where it now has over 95,000 upvotes."

She has now added "viral iguana photobomb originator" to her Instagram account bio.

This isn't her first brush with the herbivorous lizard.

"My younger brother had a pet iguana while we were growing up, so helped out with cutting up fruit for it, giving it baths. But I don't plan on getting one of my own any time soon."
