Karma Sanctum on the Green: Berkshire's rock'n'roll hotel

Sanctum on the Green: Coach house heritage.

A mid-2017 merge with Karma Group By Sanctum Hotel Group saw London's Soho Sanctum Hotel rebrand as the Karma Soho Sanctum, and kick off an expansion of the property's rock'n'roll aesthetic and attitude.

Featuring drama, glam, sexiness, a 24-hour bar – and the odd bit or two of infamy – the West End hotel continues to be a favoured venue for celebrity parties and launches.

Now, the 50-50 partnership has spawned its second property, Karma Sanctum on the Green, taking it to the picturesque village of Cookham Dean in Berkshire, a 25-minute drive from Heathrow airport.

Though the rock'n'roll theme is very much in play (think less Hard Rock, more Honky Chateau) the nine rooms' contemporary soft furnishings are designed to flatter the cosy architecture of the building's coach house heritage. The Royal Berkshire Suite features a huge bathtub and rain shower, while the deluxe king rooms all include a seating area, with a four-poster bed and in-room bath in some.

The standard rooms are large and decked out sumptuously while there's a series of en suite "canvas cottages" for glamping, nestled in the woods at the rear of the picturesque gardens.

The co-owners are hoping The Wild Wood Bar + Grill by Godiva Leisure Group will be a standalone reason to visit for guests and non-guests alike. It serves traditional British fare with modern flair. Think locally sourced meats, game and fish, all smoked, grilled and roasted by executive chef Desmond Richardson. Wild Wood's drinks list includes special vintages and a strong selection of beers, real ales, spirits and hot drinks.

A further Karma Sanctum property is under development in Bali. Karma is also developing the golf course on Rottnest Island in Western Australia.
