Kiwis not amused by Aussie tourist's nude run in Queenstown

An Australian man has allegedly run naked and drunk along a popular Queenstown wharf, revealing himself to a "whole lot of people" in a nearby casino.

Police say the 32-year-old man, who lives in the South Island tourist town, stripped off before climbing onboard the historic TSS Earnslaw ship in Lake Wakatipu.

He was spotted running around the top decks of the vessel before jumping into the lake.

Punters at the nearby Lasseters Wharf Casino called police about 1.30am on Monday (11.30pm AEDT Sunday) after the man began strolling around Steamer Wharf naked.

Sergeant Keith Newell, of Queenstown, told the Otago Daily Times "a whole lot of people" in the casino witnessed his nude stroll.

"He thought it was funny, but the patrons did not," he said.

The man was arrested by police and charged with obscene exposure and unlawfully being on a ship. He was due to appear in the Queenstown District Court on March 12.

A Queenstown police officer said the man has since laid a complaint against police.

Police would not reveal where the man was from in Australia.
