The location Set within Kosciusko National Park at the base of the craggy slopes of Mount Crackenback in the Snowy Mountains, Thredbo boasts, in winter, the longest ski runs in Australia. At other times of the year, it's a perfect destination in which to drop out for a while and watch the world go by.

The place Positioned in the heart of the village, the Lhotsky self-serviced apartments maintain a surprising tranquillity. Named after John Lhotsky, an eccentric explorer who in 1834 led a scientific expedition to the Snowy Mountains, the property is part of the Lantern Apartments group, which manage other properties in eight locations in Thredbo. There's a choice of one-, two- or three-bedroom apartments, some with spa baths, and all with their own drying room, car space and clothes washer and dryer. Other cosy comforts include heated floors and towel rails, king beds, fully equipped kitchens, pull-out couch beds for extra guests and big flat-screen TVs.

The experience If you're an adventurous sort, it's obviously all about rugging up and heading out to the slopes, with the Lhotsky apartments less than a five-minute walk, or two-minute shuttle bus trip, from the base of the Crackenback Supertrail. But, if you're more the indoor than outdoor type, you may be content sitting in the apartment's window seat wrapped in a faux-fur blanket, watching skiers whoosh down Crackenback in winter and bushwalkers trek about in summer. Regardless of which course of action (or inaction) you take, there's only one option for end of day activities: sipping and supping at Thredbo's plethora of bars and restaurants, most just a few minutes walk away.

Don't miss Lunch at Kareela Hutte (kareelahutte.com.au) is on-slope dining at its best. At 1810m and straddling the Supertrail piste, the majestic views of the mountains are second to none, the food - modern Australian with a European influence - will satisfy even the most voracious appetite, while the vast selection of schnapps, wine and beer on offer could mean that your après-lunch ski down the mountain is your last run of the day! The prawn linguine with garlic, chilli and capers is particularly highly recommended.
