A pedal-powered holiday of New Zealand reinvigorated Megan Gale's love of cycling.

A pedal-powered holiday of New Zealand reinvigorated Megan Gale's love of cycling.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST HOLIDAY?

My cycling trip in New Zealand was a recent highlight even though I've been fortunate to visit many amazing places. I did two multi-day rides including the Timber Trail, which winds through ancient forests in the North Island, and the historical Otago Central Rail Trail in the South Island. My mum is from the Ngati Kahu iwi (tribe) and grew up in Kaitaia in Northland so I've always felt a connection to New Zealand. It was wonderful to get back and explore the country on two wheels.

WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS TAKE WITH YOU?

Apart from the essentials i.e.; passport, wallet, phone, laptop and clothes, I like to try to squeeze in my yoga mat if possible, a travel candle, and vitamins such as vitamin C, zinc, ArmaForce and magnesium to support my immune system.

WHAT MAKES A PERFECT HOLIDAY?

For me it's all about new experiences, and getting to know the locals. I love good food and the odd tipple of wine so I like to level things out with exercise, plenty of rest and relaxation.

HAVE YOU HAD A BAD HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE?

Actually I've been pretty blessed. I haven't experienced anything that bad beyond perhaps accommodation and the location didn't quite live up to how it was portrayed but I'd hardly call that a bad experience.

WHAT IS NEXT ON YOUR LIST?

I've fallen in love with cycling again so I'd love to head back across the ditch to try out a few more trails. The Hawke's Bay trails would be perfect for my family to enjoy, plus I like the idea of being able to stop along the way at amazing wineries and local farmers' markets. I'd especially love to have a long lunch at Elephant Hill winery.
