Netanya Noosa review: A touch of south-east Queensland paradise

THE LOCATION

Really, it is unbeatable. Netanya Noosa is on the national park end of Hastings Street. But the real selling point is its proximity to the beach. Netanya is as beachfront as you can get, with most of its apartments facing the water. It's about 40 minutes from the Sunshine Coast Airport, about two hours' drive from Brisbane.

THE SPACE

The stunning views from Netanya Noosa.

The stunning views from Netanya Noosa.

Originally opened in 1994 – and expanded in 2000 – Netanya has had its current management for only a couple of years. In that time there have been significant changes. Manager Graham Bradford saysthe entry point, in particular, underwent a major transformation in late 2016. A meeting room was removed and the entry way opened up on to Hastings Street. The result is Providore, a coffee shop and virtual deli of mostly locally sourced products – think cheese, crackers and, of course, wine – that can be taken away. "The idea is that people can just take this up to their rooms and enjoy the view," Bradford says. Netanya is strata titled, with each of its 47 rooms having a different owner. Most short stays tend to be from Brisbane, with southern capitals dominating arrivals from elsewhere.

THE ROOM

Spacious and full of natural light, our poolside beachfront apartment opens up to a balcony that overlooks Noosa beach. We are on the second floor, so we don't feel too removed from the action. It has a well-appointed kitchenette, a large bathroom with a shower and a spa, which can comfortably fit two. There is a large flat-screen TV in the lounge area that is not turned on once while we're there, and a smaller one in the bedroom. One gripe – and it's a minor one – is that the bedroom is at the apartment's entry, away from the view. It would have been lovely to lie in bed and listen to those waves all night.

Providore has supplies at hand for guests to take to their rooms or balconies.

THE FOOD

Guests are greeted with a breakfast hamper, which is basically a DIY affair, with a half-dozen eggs, vine tomatoes, fresh fruit salad, yoghurt, bread, butter, orange juice, bacon and sausages. Although Providore is downstairs, there is no full-scale restaurant at Netanya. Not that it matters too much, as Hastings Street has plenty to offer within just a few minutes' walk. Across the road, Betty's Burgers is a popular haunt, while some more up-market options are scattered along the beachfront. And, of course, there is the Noosa Surf Club for your traditional, no-frills pub fare.

STEPPING OUT

Netanya has two entry points – Hastings Street and beachside. Take the latter option and turn left, and you have the Noosa Surf Club, which has breathtaking views to Double Island Point. Turn right, and you're just a few minutes' walk from the Noosa National Park. The coastal walk is about six kilometres and takes you through some stunning scenery. If you're lucky, like us, you might even see a stingray take flight out of the water. Back in town, Hastings Street is always humming with a wide selection of restaurants and, truth be told, somewhat overpriced shopping. But when annual rents are more than $170,000, the overheads must be huge.

THE VERDICT

Extremely comfortable and spacious, with a location that would be pretty hard to beat in Noosa. If the pool is a little too crowded for your liking, simply open the gate to the beach.

ESSENTIALS

Netanya Noosa, from $389 a night. Bookings at netanyanoosa.com, (07) 5447 4722 and info@netanyanoosa.com.au.

HIGHLIGHT

That view, which is an absolute delight to wake up to.

LOWLIGHT

The car park, which can be a little difficult to navigate, and where available car parks are of an absolute premium.
