The location This whimsical converted dairy complex is located, as the name suggests, in a quiet residential area on the other side of the highway from Leura, the appealing Blue Mountains village beloved of Sydney day-trippers that lies about 90 minutes by road west of the city.

The place The Old Leura Dairy consists of six distinctive private self-contained lodgings - The Milking Shed, The Studio, Buttercup Barn, Moo Manor, The Worker's Cottage and The Straw Bale House - set amid mature native gardens. The rustic Milking Shed provides spacious, open-plan, split-level accommodation for four, with the main sleeping area being the original hayloft. However, we doubt that its former bovine residents were ever the beneficiaries of the centrepiece slow-combustion fire on the ground floor, essential for those oft-chilly Leura nights.

The experience Everything old is moo again (or something like that). When Canadian Shaina Gliener first opened The Old Leura Dairy in 2000, she shook up the turgid Blue Mountains accommodation scene like those frothy milkshakes you can buy at the Paragon Cafe in Katoomba. Now, while The Old Leura Dairy remains an enjoyable and quirky place to stay, some of the furnishings and accoutrements would benefit from an update. Charming it is, chic it ain't. A few luxurious touches, such an espresso machine, wouldn't go astray, especially at these rates. But The Old Leura Dairy certainly remains a most congenial spot to spend a night or more, and is a relief from the usually predictable Blue Mountains B&B fare.

Don't miss One of the best places to eat, drink and hang out is the relatively new, SMH Good Food Guide-listed Leura Garage (02 4784 3391) a thoroughly modern diner inside a former smash repair shop, while Nikita Espresso Bar (02 4784 2778) is a cool breakfast or brunch option. The Old Leura Dairy also offers a gourmet continental breakfast tray for $25 per guest.
