Platinum upgrades for Great Southern Rail's Indian Pacific and Ghan trains

Great Southern Rail's iconic trains, The Indian Pacific and The Ghan, are to feature a new restaurant and bar car for platinum service passengers. Designed by architects Woods Bagot, the gleaming spaces are resplendent in mid-century elements that are respectful nods to the fact that the pedigree of the train cars is mid-century US.

Real ash floorboards, glossy dual brass "train tracks" on the ceiling (hiding air conditioning vents but they're a beautiful design feature), a bar area with studded leather, banquets positioned for lively conversation around marble and brass French cafe-style tables; and a dining room peppered with green leather and wool chairs from Italy make this a sophisticated yet hospitable space.

The design is also very "train-centric" – trading on the romance of the rails and the uniqueness of a train environment. The designers haven't tried to simply create a luxury restaurant that, if not on wheels, could fit in on any fashionable street; they've created a luxury train restaurant car, train first and foremost.

The four new Platinum Club carriages will be rolled out on the Indian Pacific and The Ghan by April 1.

The platinum service environment isn't the only thing to get a facelift. Great Southern Rail staff are overjoyed with their new uniforms, designed and outfitted by RM Williams. Featuring navy blue and striped with a classic Akubra hat, they're an easier wear than the outback tans and greens of their predecessor.
