Qantas lays on more flights as UK jet lands in Sydney

The first Qantas flight from London since the Iceland volcanic ash crisis has touched down in Sydney.

Qantas also announced today it was scheduling supplementary services between Australia and Europe.

Qantas Chief Executive Officer, Mr Alan Joyce, said the airline was doing everything possible to clear the back load of passengers and minimise the impact on customers.

At 7.10am (AEST) passengers of the QF32 were still passing through customs and immigration, enduring the tail end of a 36-hour odyssey that has included repeated delays before take-off and a further delay to a connecting flight from Singapore.

Hundreds of family members are awaiting the long-delayed arrivals of their loved ones.

A volcanic eruption in Iceland last week forced the shut down of airports across Europe and the UK, stranding hundreds of thousands of passengers trying to get to and from those destinations.

Qantas further delayed the London departure of the QF32 by 12 hours on Thursday for additional safety precautions.

Graeme Geldart and his two children Jack and Poppy have been away from wife and mum Susan Geldart for seven days longer than they expected.

"Its been an unfortunate delay but we've managed," Mr Geldart said.
