Race around the world to secure 'world's best job'

Hailey Turner has embarked on a 12-day world tour in order to try and secure the Hamilton Island caretaker job.

Hailey Turner has embarked on a 12-day world tour in order to try and secure the Hamilton Island caretaker job.

A 20-year-old Brisbane student sets out on a race around the globe on Thursday morning, in a stunt she hopes will win her the best job in the world.

In the next 12 days Hailey Turner will visit as many countries as she can to boost her application for a six-month job on the Great Barrier Reef's Hamilton Island.

She's made a short-list of 50 people out of 34,684 applications worldwide for the dream job.

"We've got Tokyo, Helsinki, Copenhagen, London, New York, Washington and LA," Ms Turner said.

"The goal is to meet as many people in as many places as I can by the time the public voting closes.

"I want to travel to some of the largest demographics for international visitors to the reef and get out and meet as many locals as I can and encourage them to come and visit the reef.

"The trip will be a mix of public activities to get the world's attention, and visiting some of the world's famous places to get tips on how to market the islands of the Great Barrier Reef."

The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) business student on Wednesday launched the website she'll be using to chronicle her trip www.seeyouatthereef.com.

Ms Turner said she wants to prove an Aussie can win the job.

"I've heard a lot of talk they're not going to give it to an Aussie, and I just want to prove an Aussie can do the job better than an international applicant," she said.

"One of the things the judges are going to be looking at will be the creativity and initiative of the applicants, as well as their ability to do this job.

"If I can convince people that their next holiday should be in Queensland, and do it in a creative and unusual way, I hope that will get everyone's attention."

The top 50 will now be narrowed down to 10 by Tourism Queensland, with an eleventh wildcard entry to be voted for online.

They will then fly to Hamilton Island for the final selection process before the winner starts work on July 1.
