The Dorchester Collection group has not disclosed the amount spent on the restoration of Rome's famous 19th-century Hotel Eden. But according to Italy's Il Sole 24 Ore newspaper, "Suffice it to say a veritable mound of precious marble from Pakistan was transported to Carrara so it would be crafted by expert Italian artisans."

Fabulously positioned on Pincian Hill (where Julius Caesar had a villa), with views across the Villa Borghese one way and the rooftops and domes of Centro Storico the other, this 19th-century classic reopened its doors on April 1.

The lobbies, bedrooms and function spaces are designed by Bruno Moinard and Claire Betaille of the French firm 4BI & Associes, whose credits include spaces for Cartier and Balenciaga, the Four Seasons London and Dorchester's eponymous London property and the Hotel Plaza Athenee in Paris. The restaurants and spa were overseen by Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku of Jouin Manku, also known for striking high-end spaces for luxury brands and hotels.

Both have worked to a brief that melds contemporary elements with classical style, while reducing the number of rooms and suites from 121 to 98, meaning bigger digs for all.

And downstairs, there's a new "secret bar", hidden in the ground floor library.

But some things remain constant. Fabio Ciervo, who brought La Terazza restaurant a Michelin star is back on the burners, pairing seasonal and nutrition-savvy dishes to one of the most view-blessed dining rooms in the Italian capital.

And Il Giardino restaurant and bar embraces the hotel's terrace looking out over the gardens of Villa Medici, the scene of many celebrity liaisons in the past.
