The location Port Albert is Gippsland's oldest port, a small fishing village on a placid stretch of coastline, a short way south of the lush rainforests and logging plantations of the Strzelecki Ranges. Its main business these days is tourism, and the calm ocean waters are good for fishing and boating.

The place Rodondo is on the main street, just metres from the town's wide, crescent-shaped harbour. Built in 1871 and fully restored, the main house is charmingly rustic, with polished old floorboards, high ceilings and three comfortable guest rooms. A two-storey cottage at the rear of the property has three more rooms, two of which have harbour views from the wooden deck. There are also two single-room cabins.

The experience Breakfast is in a sunny room in the main house, with two docile hounds at our feet. Guests gather around communal tables, while the owner, one-woman band Susan, whips up bacon and eggs on the stove. Elsewhere, not a lot happens at Port Albert, even in summer, which is a big part of the appeal. Only a handful of commercial fishermen still operate out of the harbour, which has been reclaimed by amateur boaties and sailors. The town has two good restaurants, both of which serve unimpeachably fresh fish, and one pub.

Don't miss Right next door to Rodondo, the Maritime Museum (03 5183 2520; yarrampa.customer.netspace.net.au/pamm.html) is worth visiting to get a sense of Port Albert's important place in early Victorian history. The story of the town's genesis in 1840 is a real-life thriller worthy of a Hollywood plot.
