Saseka Tented Camp: A new property at Kruger National Park, South Africa

In March last year, the owners of the 14,000-hectare Thornybush Private Nature Reserve near Hoedspruit in South Africa removed the 27 kilometres of fence that separated their property from neighbouring Timbavati Game Reserve. A remarkable wildlife migration tract was created, since, in turn, Timbavati's border with the Kruger National Park was already fenceless. And animals have been enjoying it ever since – in huge numbers. That's put to rest past criticism of Thornybush on the basis of it being essentially, a free range zoo, as it's now an integral part of the Greater Kruger National Park Conservation Area.

A year after the fencing fell, a new Thornybush property has opened. Saseka Tented Camp is on a curve in the Monwana River where the aspect affords great game viewing without even having to leave the accommodation – though game drives are encouraged.

The property, imagined by leaders-in-the-lodge-field, Silvio Rech & Lesley Carstens Architecture and Design, comprises 10, 200-square-metre tented suites surrounding two common areas, one of those for exclusive use of small groups and families. The other offers a bar area and small library space with a fireplace. Each suite has its own private pool, outdoor shower and deck, positioned to look out onto the riverbed, where the wild things roam.

In keeping with The Thornybush Collection's philosophy of environmental care, recycled materials have been used throughout.

The Thornybush Collection is made up of 12 lodges, 11 of which are in the Thornybush Private Nature Reserve, with one in Sabi Sand. Thornybush Nature Reserve is just over five hours' drive from Johannesburg.

Tents at Saseka are priced around $1477 a person twin share, all-inclusive. See sasekatentedcamp.com
