One of the most exciting moments of discovering a new city is the first view of it - often from a plane window, as you make your approach.

US space imagery company DigitalGlobe has provided 15 stunning images of international capital cities shot from a WorldView-3 satellite - the world's highest resolution commercial imaging satellite that uses so-called "30 centimetre" technology. In other words: One pixel equals 30 cm x 30 cm on the ground. Unlike the imagery shot by older satellites, WorldView-3's sensor allows DigitalGlobe to even see through smoke and haze.

Satellite images are increasingly used by governments and NGOs to get insights into countries such as Syria or parts of Iraq, which have been cut off from the international community for months or years. Satellite images have also been used to track refugee movements and elephant poaching.

But what can you discern from the satellite images below? Test your knowledge of world cities in the quiz.
