Singapore Airlines has finally entered Australia's premium economy class market, launching the new class on board its Sydney-Singapore route on Monday.

The airline's new premium economy cabin features a width of either 18.5 (47cm) or 19.5 inches (49.5cm), depending on aircraft type, with a 20cm recline and a seat pitch (legroom) of 38 inches (96cm).

Passengers also receive noise-cancelling headphones and can watch entertainment on a 34cm HD screen, which Singapore claims is the largest in its class.

Seats will feature a 38 inch seat pitch and a width of between 18.5 to 19.5 inches, including an 8 inch recline.

The seats also features two USB ports, a power supply and cocktail table.

Passengers will receive a 35kg baggage allowance when flying the new class and have the option of pre-ordering their meals from a selection of main courses.

Singapore Airlines, normally on the cutting edge of seat design (the airline wowed the industry with the introduction of its private suites for the first A380 superjumbo) has lagged behind other carriers on premium economy.

Qantas, which was one of the first airlines to introduce this class, has had great success with it from its commencement in 2008.

Since then, many carriers have introduced similar seats, offering more legroom, typically with better food and facilities, for those who cannot afford the lie-flat luxury of business or first class.

Singapore Airlines is retrofitting 19 Airbus A380s and 19 Boeing 777-300ERs to include several dozen premium economy seats. It also will put the wider seats on new A350 planes it will receive starting in early 2016.

The airline's A380 superjumbos feature 36 premium economy seats, with 28 on board the 777s. Fares for one-way flights to Singapore next month are about $1750. This compares to economy class fares at a price of about $520 and business class fares of about $2800. The airline says return premium economy flights on the route start from $2240.

The Sydney-Singapore route is the first to feature the new class, with 18 more routes to follow, starting with Hong Kong and London later this month.
