Six Senses Duxton, Singapore: New hotel offers theatre and fantasy in Tanjong Pagar

Six Senses Duxton Singapore

With all eyes on the much anticipated opening of the glamorous Six Senses Fiji, a sister property in downtown Singapore has marked the operator's first foray into urban hospitality. Known for luxurious resorts in exotic places brimming with natural charms, Six Senses has created a kind of resort in the city that, in the absence of a spectacular natural environment, offers theatre and fantasy in one of Singapore's most atmospheric corners, Tanjong Pagar, as its means of escape.

Six Senses Duxton inhabits a row of 19th-century shophouses that have the group's commitment to "authenticity, sustainability, and community" front and centre. Working with local suppliers, British style icon (and Bond girl) Anouska Hempel designed interiors with historically inspired themes, referencing Chinese, Malay and European influences as well as notes from the area's history as a former cinnamon plantation turned haven for opium and gambling dens.

The 49 guestrooms and suites are all different, ranging from decadently dark to sparkling white. Calligraphy-patterned wallpaper, black lacquer and dramatic jewel-coloured chinoiserie flourishes, some from Hempel's personal collection, abound in public spaces and the bar and restaurant extend to atmospheric alfresco seating on a street-side breezeway.

In keeping with Six Senses' resort DNA, Six Senses Duxton offers wellness activities that integrate the community, such as traditional Chinese medicine consultations with a local expert and tea appreciation classes at a nearby teahouse. The hotel welcomes guests with a bag full of gifts that includes Tiger Balm and puzzles.

Six Senses Maxwell is set to open a short walk away in September. It will have a gym, which will be free for Six Senses Duxton guests to use.
