Perhaps the most luxurious (and awaited) resort opening of 2016 just sneaks in before the end of the year. Soneva Jani, the newest Soneva property, is now taking bookings and opened its fabulous doors on November 1.

In the 5.6 kilometre-long Edufaaru Lagoon in Noonu Atoll, north of Male, Soneva Jani clings to Medhufaru Island. With only 24 villas, that means low density and lots of privacy.

It follows Soneva Fushi, which set the standard for Maldivian hideaway luxury 20 years ago, and joins the stable with Soneva Kiri in Thailand's Koh Kood group as well as a luxury yacht also in the Maldives.

The newcomer comprises exquisite water villas and one island villa, with additional island villas planned. Each has a private pool and opens to its own stretch of lagoon, with some villas featuring slides going directly from the top deck into the lagoon below.

Like all other Soneva properties, interiors are by Soneva co-founder Eva Shivdasani, who along with husband and fellow founder, Sonu Shivdasani, was mindful of sympathy to the beautiful surrounds and the prevalence of high quality sustainable materials in the driftwood and starfish-toned decor. Sophisticated sustainability systems aim to protect the delicate environment.

Each master bedroom features a retractable roof for night time star-gazing and the resort features an observatory with high-powered telescope.

It also offers Cinema Paradiso, an outdoor cinema where guests listen to movies on headphones so as not to disturb wildlife and guests not in attendance.

Medhufaru is a former farming island and large gardens supply the resort's kitchens, and have walking trails open to guests.

Other daily activities include yoga, dolphin cruises, island picnics and using the bicycle trails and tennis court. There is a kids club.

Soneva Jani has an opening special that represents savings of 50 per cent: $US1939 a night, minimum seven-night stay for travel until December 19. It includes daily breakfast and dinner.
