Renewed luxury: Phinda Homestead.

After fire damage left Phinda Homestead uninhabitable in late 2016, andBeyond took the opportunity to take its luxury lodge to the next level.

The exclusive-use property in Phinda Private Game Reserve in the KwaZulu Natal province of South Africa has been completely rebuilt and is once again open to guests. It comprises four private villas and expansive common areas including a sun deck, fire pit and pool.

Interiors take cues from the local Zulu culture, and the earthy tones, traditional Nguni hides, woven works and other crafts, all sourced from nearby, create a vibrant aesthetic.

Large expanses of glass and large bathtubs in spacious bathrooms are situated to capture bush views. A deep verandah includes a bar that does double duty for breakfast and sundowners, and there's plenty of room for alfresco dining and imbibing. The open kitchen with hanging herb garden invites interaction with guests. There is also a gym and massage area, and a nanny's room.

Phinda Private Game Reserve used to be an area of cattle and pineapple farms. The reclaimed wilderness is now home to a variety of landscapes and an abundance of wildlife, including black rhino.

One of six secluded andBeyond lodges in the reserve, Phinda Homestead is a single-booking property that can host families or groups. The tariff includes a dedicated ranger and tracker team, private safari vehicle and game drives; all meals and beverages, service of a chef and butler. Rates from about $7800 (ZAR80,000) a villa a night until the end of the year. From 2019, rates will rise to about $9300 (ZAR95,000).
