Kerry Hotel Hong Kong: Nearly lost in space

In a city with a wealth of glamorous hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants and high-end boutiques, there's one luxury that is rare: space. And that is what Hong Kong's newest luxury hotel has in spades.

Conceived as an "urban resort", the Kerry Hotel Hong Kong is the flagship of the brand from Shangri-La, with a more relaxed, more millennial identity than its stellar big sister.

Key to its remarkable points of difference is the land it inhabits. In 2011 Shangri-La secured the absolute waterfront site on Kowloon Bay. Part of the deal was an agreement that the hotel group would transform an adjacent bus terminal, sending it underground and develop public parklands at street level. That's yet to happen, but is set to augment an already-remarkable asset: views.

The mid-rise hotel is oriented to take in a sweeping expanse of Victoria Harbour, from Central in one direction to the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal and mouth of the harbour in the other.

A 25-metre pool surrounded by a deck that offers sun loungers along the water's edge and a cocktail garden with lush low-rise plantings and comfy sofas affording a 270-degree water vista will surely become among the city's most instagrammed settings.

Inside is just as connected to both the aspect and a sense of space. Rooms start at not much under 50 square metres and have floor-to-ceiling windows and design notes in sympathy with the outdoors.

And the soaring lobby, where soft-toned marble abounds, brings the outside in, similarly.

Hong Kong architect and designer Andre Fu's interiors play cleverly on Hong Kong hotel style across the decades as do the menus at the property's various eateries, all of which feature an outdoor area.

The Base Camp gym is, quite simply, enormous, and also has views. And its programs extend outside to running clubs and other activities along the promenade to which the hotel has direct access.

Like many of the rooms, the gym comes with a view.

And with the biggest pillar-less ballroom in the country as well as multiple function and convention spaces, the Kerry proves that space is a very fine frontier indeed.
