Spinifex on the Beach, Sandy Point accommodation review: Weekend away

The Location

The famous Wilsons Promontory looms at the end of the unspoiled Sandy Point beach, a little over two hours' drive south-east of Melbourne. The small beach community is nestled among the sand dunes and is the last village along the coast before the Prom.

The Place

Spinifex is built on the sand dunes that give Sandy Point its name. It is a modern architect-designed beach house that sleeps up to seven people. There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and the large living-dining area and well-appointed kitchen have splendid views north over farmland and Shallow Inlet. A huge deck, complete with a barbecue, is high above the ground and captures the morning sun - perfect for a lazy breakfast over the papers. The reverse-cycle airconditioner is great for summer, but should the weather turn cold, take advantage of the open fireplace. A two-minute walk from the back door over the dunes leads straight to the water - the stroll providing spectacular views of the ocean and the Prom.

The Experience

Sandy Point, close enough to Melbourne for a weekend escape, is an ideal getaway. It's a great base to explore the region and a great place just to relax in, enjoying the views, the bird life and walks along the pristine beach. The main swimming beach is perfect and in summer is protected by patrolling life-guards, which is comforting for parents. There are surf lessons and board hire available in town, as well as mini golf for families to enjoy. A little further afield you can visit the classic art deco pub in Fish Creek and a small farmers' market in Foster (third Saturday of every month) for those who want to capture some of South Gippsland's rolling farmland.

Don't Miss

No trip to this part of the world would be complete with a side trip to nearby Wilsons Prom, and the chance to spot some wildlife, stroll on Squeaky Beach or hike through the national park's many walks.
